Abstract: Spatial analysis can facilitate the communication of complex urban problems, allowing stakeholders to better understand them. Monica Haddad, Associate Professor at Iowa State University, will present four case studies focusing on urban planning issues, named: low-income housing in San Francisco, U.S.; metropolitan growth in Des Moines, Iowa, U.S.; distribution of urban parks in Curitiba, Brazil; and distribution of sanitary sewer in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.  All case studies’ methodologies are embedded in geographic information systems combining remote sensing, spatial interpolation, raster analysis, and Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis.  The findings of the spatial analyses can offer recommendations for policy makers for all four urban areas.  For San Francisco, the suburbanization of poverty can be visually examined indicating that the urban poor is located in areas with lower job opportunities.  For Des Moines, areas that may need changes in their land use and zoning can be identified. For Curitiba, locations and sizes of new urban parks can be identified so that the urban poor can have adequate green open space and access to recreation and leisure opportunities.  For Belo Horizonte, areas that should have priority with regards to receiving investments for sanitary sewer expansion with respect to the urban poor can be identified.
